Shipping quote check

Will a lightweight product be expensive to ship?

It can be. Parcel carriers may price a large, light box using dimensional weight instead of the number on the scale. Check the packed size before you decide whether a product has workable fulfilment economics.

The practical rule: for services that apply dimensional-weight pricing, the carrier compares actual packed weight with calculated dimensional weight and uses the greater figure. The exact divisor, rounding, limits, surcharges and rate still depend on the carrier, service, origin, destination and account terms.

How the calculation works

Measure the outside of the final packed carton: length, width and height. Do this after protective material is added. Both FedEx Singapore and DHL Singapore currently show a divisor of 5,000 for their illustrated centimetre-and-kilogram parcel calculations.

Illustrative parcel formula length × width × height in cm ÷ 5,000

Example: 40 × 30 × 20 cm ÷ 5,000 = 4.8 kg dimensional weight. If the packed product weighs 1.2 kg and the quoted service uses this formula, 4.8 kg is the higher figure. This example is not a shipping quote.

Do not apply one divisor or example rate to every route. Freight modes and carrier products can use different density ratios and commercial terms, so the final quote must use the exact packed shipment and service.

Check these inputs before choosing a product

Final carton size

Ask for the outside dimensions after retail packaging, protection and any mailer or export carton are included.

Actual packed weight

Use the packed unit, not a bare product sample or a marketplace listing that omits packaging.

Units per parcel

State whether orders usually contain one unit, bundles, or several separately packed pieces.

Destination and service

A product can look viable on one lane and fail on another. Quote the buyer countries and service level you actually need.

Why this matters for the DropFulfill order profile

Our recorded orders paid 1 May – 3 October 2026 had a median declared weight of 20 g, mostly light categories such as fashion accessories, beauty and apparel. That history describes those orders; it does not mean a bulky product will ship on the same cost basis.

The same order-management dataset records a median order value of US$44. Declared weight is the weight recorded on the order, not the weight a carrier bills. Orders fulfilled manually outside the system are excluded. These figures are operating context, not a forecast for your product.

A useful pre-quote brief

  1. Send the exact product or supplier link and variant.
  2. Give the expected units per customer order.
  3. Add the destination country and required delivery speed.
  4. Include final packed length, width, height and actual weight if known.
  5. Ask what is included in the quoted amount and which shipment basis the quote uses.

If packaging is still unknown, say so. We can source and quote the exact configuration, but the shipping part remains provisional until the packed dimensions and route are confirmed.
